Tata Elxsi’s core practice areas cover embedded product design services, industrial design & engineering, animation & VFX services, and systems integration services.
Tata Elxsi’s design and creative expertise coupled with strong technology competencies through its practice areas, has enabled the company to address diverse industries such as automotive, consumer electronics, entertainment, multimedia, medical instrumentation, semiconductors, networking and telecom, wireless and digital user interface.
Since 1989, Tata Elxsi has been growing steadily YoY with positive cash flow. This steady performance has enabled the customers across the world continue to repose their trust in the company and its divisions. For the quarter and year ended March 31, 2008 Tata Elxsi reported a net profit of Rs. 52.85 crores for 2007/08 on net sales of Rs. 403.8 crores. The company reported a 30% YoY increase in revenues over FY 06-07.
Tata Elxsi's delivery capability is supported by state-of-the-art design centers and labs across seven centers in India, studios in Mumbai, and advanced communication facilities that allow for seamless global operations. Recently the company announced the setting up of two new development centers in Coimbatore and Hyderabad and the expansion of its facility in Thiruvananthapuram to meet the scale-up requirements of the clients. Together these two state-of-the-art design centers with world-class facilities, satellite links, training and recreational facilities will accommodate over 700 engineers and designers. The facility in Thiruvananthapuram, which currently houses around 600 engineers, has been expanded to accommodate another 1200 engineers. The company reported an increase in employee base from 2500 in 2006-2007 to 3500+ in 2007-2008.
Product Design Services (PDS)
India is gradually emerging as an important hub for R&D outsourcing. The availability of large talent pool, rapidly growing domestic market, good education infrastructure, availability of abundant talent, low cost structure coupled with an enabling business environment, rising government support, improving infrastructure have been the major growth drivers .
Tata Elxsi has been in the Product R&D Outsourcing Business since 1989. Given the challenges of outsourced Product R&D market, the business focus of the company has helped develop very mature in-bound & out-bound processes to engage with clients on projects across the life cycle of products. Product design services (PDS) contribute around 80-82 % to the company’s revenues and the company’s main focus remains in embedded engineering space.
The division’s services include full service software, hardware and system design and development programs for technology products. It offers a rich portfolio of reusable software components, ready-to-deploy product frameworks, licensable IPs and product development services. It services sectors such as automotive and aerospace, consumer electronics, networking and telecom, semiconductors and multimedia with cost effective product engineering, time-to-market advantage and multi-site delivery quality standards.
The delivery of the latest technologies and product trends is through key partnerships such as ARM, Tensilica etc. The company is also an active participant in forums such as Autosar, BMCO, MoCA etc.
Innovation Design Engineering (IDE)
Innovation Design Engineering (IDE) provides end-to-end brand and product development services across industries-FMCG, Transportation, Consumer electronics & appliances, Digital user experience and Medical devices.

Visual Computing Labs (VCL)
Tata Elxsi’s Visual Computing Labs (VCL) division in couple of years has successfully delivered projects for both global as well as Indian customers including fully animated TVC’s (2D and 3D), animation & integration with live characters for feature films, animation for Television Series, animation for Internet, VFX for Films and for TVCs.
Visual Computing Labs has proven to be a trusted partner, both in terms of stability as well as commitment by adding better value than any other player in the space. VCL’s partnership with the likes of Disney and YRF has further enhanced its credibility in delivering qualitative animation and visual effects.
The highlight of the year was being conferred with the National Award for ‘Best Special Effects’ for the film Anniyan at the 53rd National Film Awards. The President of India, Smt. Pratibha Patil, presented this award.
VCL also won nominations at Arena Animation CNBC - TV 18 Golden Cursor Animation Awards, Star Screen Awards, Filmfare Awards and Producers Guild Awards
System Integration (SI)
System Integration Services addresses enterprise and high performance computing markets with their range of hardware, networking products and storage solutions. It also addresses the CAD/CAM/CAE market in the mentioned sectors. In the media and entertainment sector it offers broadcast solutions to cater to setting up of a TV channel, data archival solutions and weather forecasting software. The division also has expertise in setting up Virtual Reality Centers for the benefit of the manufacturing, defense and automotive industries. This business unit caters to many prestigious public and private sector organizations and has a team of qualified and experienced sales and support professionals located across the country.
