December 10, 2003- Pioneering a major breakthrough in the area of 3D Animation in Hindi movies, Visual Computing Labs (VCL), a division of Tata Elxsi Limited that offers content creation, animation and special effects services to both Hollywood as well as Bollywood, has successfully composited (mixed) a 3D Character with live action, for the forthcoming Bollywood feature "Fun2shh".
In a first time use of this technique in a Hindi movie, Visual Computing Labs will present the innovative mixing of the 3D character models with live characters in a movie, along with some slick 3D character animation in Fun2Shh, a hilariously funny entertainer, slated for release on December 19, 2003. Incidentally, VCL has already achieved the distinction of being the first to use this technique in an Indian movie, when they composited a CG Girl character with live characters in the Tamil movie BOYS, directed by renowned director Shankar (read press release).
"We take pride in being the first to present the innovative use of this technology (compositing of a 3D Character with live characters ) in a Hindi Movie. This has been possible because of our rich expertise and our commitment to conceptualizing, developing and delivering the latest techniques in the industry. We are happy to announce that the final output will be comparable with international standards, and through this landmark achievement, we are confident of opening new vistas for the Indian film industry" said Mr. K. Chandrashekhar, Head - Visual Computing Labs.
Produced by Ashtavinayak films, Fun2ssh is about three snappy dudes and their unbelievably hilarious adventures that span over about ten centuries. The movie features seasoned stars like Paresh Rawal, Gulshan Grover, Kader Khan, Farida Jalal, along with some young stars like Anuj Sawhney, Iqbal Khan, Nataneya Singh, and Raima Sen.
Given the interesting theme of the film involving time-travel, and the comical nature of the movie, Fun2shh is replete with some amazing visual tricks and stunning in-your-face visual effects including time travel sequences, magical tricks, etc. along with the ample use of magical devices as a prop for transition sequences, period changes and so on.
The entire effort, amounting to more than 25 minutes of effects, was choreographed by the talented team at Visual Computing Labs Mumbai facility, under the able and expert supervision of Pankaj Khandpur, Creative Director-VCL. The special effects comprise primary and secondary colour correction, and chroma-key corrections to replace backgrounds; in fact chroma-key sequence has been used on the introduction of each character in the movie. Other methods used in the film include time warp techniques, transitional sequences, costume replacement and time devices used during narratives, where two activities are incorporated in the same shot simultaneously.
In other projects, VCL has successfully delivered VFX and animation effects for various Indian and Hollywood films from its state-of-the-art facilities at Bangalore and Mumbai. VCLs market presence is ever increasing with a steady flow of projects from TV Series, AD Films, Animatics and Games Development.
