Kal Ho Na Ho to showcase innovative Visual Effects by Visual Computing Labs VFX focus on look-n-feel, aesthetic appearance of the film

November 19, 2003 - Visual Computing Labs (VCL), a division of Tata Elxsi Limited that offers content creation, animation and special effects services to both Hollywood as well as Bollywood, proudly announces the successful execution of visual effects for the forthcoming Bollywood multi-starrer "Kal Ho Na Ho".

Visual Computing Labs has delivered about 40 minutes of Special Effects on Karan Johars `Kal Ho Na Ho slated for release on November 28, 2003. Directed by Nikhil Advani, the film has Jaya Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Preity Zinta and Saif Ali Khan in lead roles. Kal Ho Na Ho, a mega blockbuster venture, revolves around the power of friendship and is billed as an emotional love story.

"The challenge with "Kal Ho Na Ho" was in creating special effects that go beyond the conventional treatment used in tricks, stunts and action sequences. The emphasis of the VFX was towards working on the look-n-feel, design and thus enhance the viewers experience on the films aesthetic appearance. We achieved this using our rich expertise and our in-house optimization techniques. The effects are not felt visibly as these were used to enable storytelling in an effective manner, and this was the biggest compliment for us." said Mr. Chandrashekhar . Given the high profile of the movie, it is packaged with some stunning visual effects that have been choreographed by the talented team at Visual Computing Labs Mumbai facility, under the able and expert supervision of Pankaj Khandpur, Creative Director-VCL. The special effects comprise primary and secondary colour correction, and chroma-key corrections to replace backgrounds; in fact chroma-key sequence has been used on the introduction of each character in the movie. Other methods used in the film include time warp techniques, transitional sequences, costume replacement and time devices used during narratives, where two activities are incorporated in the same shot simultaneously.

In other projects, VCL has successfully delivered VFX and animation effects for various Indian and Hollywood films from its state-of-the-art facilities at Bangalore and Mumbai.
