Provides dazzling CGI and Visual Effects
August 25, 2004 – Yashraj Films packs a punch with yet another exhilarating movie, Dhoom, and this time the magic is provided by Tata Elxsi’s Visual Computing Labs (VCL). "Dhoom" starring Abhishek Bachchan, John Abraham, Esha Deol and Uday Chopra is a fast paced, high-octane action thriller produced by Aditya Chopra, directed by Sanjay Gadhavi with the action sequences directed by Allan Amin.
For the film, VCL worked very closely with the directors – from the planning, to the on-shoot supervision, to the final execution – to provide expertise in VFX and CGI. This included styling and designing the look of the film, the outstanding opening credits sequence, to the various time-compression techniques and multiple split images.
The main VFX component involved explosions, smoke, fire & gun-shot simulations, morphs, body-double replacements, and chroma-key techniques, which allowed some of the most dangerous leaps and falls to be shot in the safety of the studio along with wire, rig, and harness removal. VCL has delivered a total of over 535 shots and more than 25 minutes of gripping effects in a short span of less than 8 weeks.
“As a lot of the physical stunts had great risk, and physical limitations, CGI was used extensively to make the final on-screen shots credible and with that wow factor. A key input from VCL was the visual technique of increasing the apparent speed of the motorbikes on screen, thus adding to the excitement of the overall experience”, commented Mr. Pankaj Khandpur, Creative Director – Visual Computing Labs and a specialist in VFX.
