Jack Lemmon’s words aptly describes Ashutosh Gowarikars (of Lagaan’ fame) latest blockbuster Swades. Tata Elxsi’s Visual Computing Labs further heightens the nationalistic portrayal with unobtrusive visual effects.
Visual Computing Labs (VCL) adds depth to several natural phenomena sequences - the night skies, stars, moons and clouds. ‘Effects’ during the climax included 3D modelling and compositing of NASAs Space Shuttle in series in which Mohan Bhargava, the protagonist played by Shah Rukh Khan, appears.“The Shuttle was digitally created while the film was actually shot in Houston and Florida”, explains Pankaj Khandpur, Creative Head – Visual Computing Labs.
Digitally created and animated 3D ‘autumn’ leaves, lent more flavour to a love song The compositing of a train and a bus in the travel sequences, sparks in the electricity shots, titles were the other VFX components. VCL also re-generated the original NASA Space Program footage to make it suitable for the film. Visual Computing Labs was also responsible for the execution of all the Swades theatrical teasers and trailers.
Mr. K Chandrashekar, GM & Head – Visual Computing Labs said, “It was a pleasure working with Ashutosh. Though the Visual Effects provided by VCL was understated, it was extremely involving. Subtle effects are far more complicated to work on since one strives to achieve effortless normalcy as compared to in-your-face effects”.
