Windows Media DRM 10 for portable devices (WMDRM10-PD) is a DRM standard devised by Microsoft. WMDRM10-PD enables the secure distribution of multimedia content over a wide range of consumer devices such as MP3 Players, DVD players, Set Top Boxes, Mobile Handsets etc. The system enforces usage rules and protects the multimedia content from being used illegally. Usage rules can include expiration dates, the number of times a user can play an audio or video file, the number of times a user can copy an audio or video file etc. Tata Elxsi has developed a lightweight and optimized WMDRM10 stack based on Microsoft reference implementation considering the limitations of embedded devices. The target mobile handset was based on ARM9E core and was with limited resources available for adding DRM stack. So the DRM stack was further tuned for easy integration with the mobile handset of the client. Also added custom interfaces to the DRM stack, which enables the application to access the required parameters in a safe way. The activity also involved upgradation of the client supplied USB driver to MTP driver and integration with the DRM stack. This was required for supporting license and content transfers from Windows PC to the device.
