Project: Development of Layer 1/0 of CDMA 2000 Protocol Stack for a Mobile
Phone Test Setup.
Client: Leading management, systems and technology consulting firm working
for a Mobile Infrastructure company.
Salient Solutions Feature: CDMA 2000 defines a complete protocol & air interface for wireless
communication The stack functionalities are typically implemented on ASIC
as this kind of capability is difficult to be achieved in a programmable
processor. The TEL engagement was to implement the same on a DSP. The
brief project overview is given below:
The Interference Test System developed was used for the interface testing
of one of the under laying RF technology.
WCDMA including HSDPA
CDMA 2000 1xRTT
CDMA 2000 1xEV-DO
Interference Test System consists of a Base Transceiver System (BTS) and
two Mobile Systems (MS). A BTS contains two transceivers (TRX) that are
each capable of supporting 2 MS’s. An MS contains a single TRX. MS and BTS
communicate either over wireless or wired RF link.
The Project Scope:
The following modules were executed on the target DSP Hardware.
Layer 0 components (signal chain + frame work)
Layer 1 component
Test harness
Associated Matlab simulation models, radio channel
multi path, fading simulation
The Key Challenges:
The major technical challenges of this engagement were development & Testing
of highly specialized algorithms of the following techniques:
Channel Estimation: Estimation
of the error introduced by the communication channel and subsequent
error handling/noise reduction
Finger Acquisition & Tracking:
Acquiring the wireless signal among several other signals on the communication
medium & tracking the fingers is an engineering challenge. The signals
have to be acquired and evaluated on a second-to-second basis as per
3G standards.
Key Customer Value :
The engagement helped the customer to develop high quality product with
help of a team with rich expertise in 3G communications protocol development
and implementation for mobile phones. Tata Elxsi provided value to the
customer by offering a cost-effective product against aggressive time-to-market
constraints.
