The customer is a leading European manufacturer of enterprise networking products.
By shrinking new product development time, the customer knew it could improve competitiveness in networking products. Having decided to outsource part of the product-build, the customer surveyed the landscape for a right-fit partner. The customer found its partner in Tata Elxsi.
Tata Elxsi experts designed and developed the Gigabit Ethernet Uplink card. This covered board design and bring up, POST, diagnostics and finally tool development - together leading up to a quality product.
By means of a proprietary bus, the Gigabit Ethernet Uplink Card interfaced with the main board of a Gigabit Token Ring Switch (used by enterprise LANs).
The Gigabit Ethernet Uplink Card featured the following hardware on the board:
RM7000 MIPS processor |
GT64120 system controller |
Gigabit Ethernet PHY, UART, and JTAG ports |
FLASH/SDRAM memories, RTC circuit and power supply interface |
Bus arbitration FPGA between local bus and host bus |
Control logic FPGA between host and onboard PCI bus |
The RM7000 CPU directly interfaced with the GT64120 system controller. The GT chip, in turn, generated interfaces to various on-board devices. The Gigabit Ethernet chip (i82543) directly interfaced with one of the PCI buses of the GT chip.
The Tata Elxsi solution featured:
Board design and PCB layout for a 233mm x 160mm, 10-layer card |
Firmware development to initialize all devices, POST/diagnostics; Glue logic for onboard devices including RTC, FPGAs, memories, Gigabit chip, PHY and UART ports
Development of drivers (including driver library functions) and test library |
Development of test tool and debug utilities for card testing |
Tools
Mentor board station; logic analyzer and test equipment for Gigabit card
The customer benefited from cost-effective and efficient product development.
