Feature Enhancement - Point Cloud

The objective of the project was to develop software that takes a point cloud representation of objects as input, and develops a closely approximated surface for modeling purposes.

Client Profile
Our client is a leading ISV in 3D modeling and animation software.


Salient Product Features
Our client's package is a general-purpose solid and surface modeler with extensive 2D/3D forms manipulating and sculpting capabilities. Salient features of the package include:

Reverse engineering capabilities
Level of detail specification
Photo realistic rendering based on a rendering engine.
Mixed wire frame and shaded renderings could be produced in the same image


Salient Tata Elxsi solution features
Design and development of an application module with the following features:

Part I of the module develops a geometrically approximated mesh from the input data points of the object.
Part II of the module optimizes the mesh by retaining the close approximation at edges and optimizing the number of triangles representing the mesh. This ensures that the module operates at an optimum performance levels in terms of rendering speed and retains the closest approximation at the edges.
Performance of the module is tested and optimized for all the conditions in a networked environment.

The application source code is platform independent and could be compiled and run on either Windows or UNIX machines.
